报告题目:Effective Soil Density for Small-Strain Shear Waves in Saturated Granular Materials

讲座内容:

Small-strain shear modulus, an important parameter in soil dynamics and geotechnical earthquake engineering, is often calculated by using measured shear wave velocity and soil density. This seminar presents an analytical and experimental investigation of the concept of effective density, which is the correct density that should be used to calculate small-strain shear modulus. Bender element tests and resonant column tests were conducted on various granular materials in dry and saturated conditions. Values of small-strain shear modulus for the dry condition are compared with corresponding values for the saturated condition, which are calculated using saturated density and effective density. For bender element tests, the use of saturated density produced errors as high as 28% in the shear modulus, whereas the use of effective density resulted in errors generally less than 5%. For resonant column tests, errors in the shear modulus obtained using saturated density were smaller than those for bender element tests because of the lower range of excitation frequency and effect of mass polar moment of inertia of the loading system. Effective density is expected to be important for fine and medium sands at high-frequency excitations, such as bender element tests, coarse clean sands at lower frequencies, such as for resonant column tests, and clean gravels at essentially all frequencies of geotechnical interest.

 

报告人简介:

Dr. Qiu received his B.S. degree in hydraulic engineering from Tsinghua University, P.R.China, in 2000 and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in civil engineering with a focus in geotechnical engineering from University of California – Los Angeles in 2002 and 2005, respectively. Dr. Qiu currently serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering and International Journal of Geomechanics, ASCE, secretary and Board member for the United States Universities Council on Geotechnical Education and Research, and secretary for Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics Committee, Geo-Institute, ASCE. Dr. Qiu is a recipient of Excellent Paper Award from International Journal of Geomechanics, ASCE, in 2008 and the Faculty Early Career Development Award (CAREER) from the US National Science Foundation in 2015.
